Sophia Ioannou Gjerding
sophiaioannougjerding@gmail.com
Through research-driven works that draw on popular culture, critical theory, as well as historical sources, Sophia Ioannou Gjerding examines how image production affects us both culturally and politically. In particular, she works with the underlying power structures that characterize today’s image production, such as the representation of gender, nature and history. A key element in her work is a study of the discourses that exist in new image technology such as CGI (computer generated imagery), when the production of virtual worlds in movies and computer games creates a new discourse of objectivity.
Gjerding is interested in how fiction and facts are entangled in historical narratives and museum collections, and uses artistic strategies to expose the biases that are incorporated in contemporary culture. “Sophia Ioannou Gjerding presupposes history as an ever-shifting constellation of stories. To understand the evolution of humans is to interpret visual stories, while the deep time of Earth reveals itself to us in the sounds of animals, land, natural phenomena, and celestial bodies that far exceed our existence. Her practice is archaeological in method and speculative in form, with images playing a central role. She begins her process in places where historicity strives to be both wide and deep, including institutional archives and even video games. There, she collects statues, photographs, documents, characters, and anecdotes, adding artifacts of varying source materials to her ‘carrier bag.’ From this repository, Gjerding selects fragmented nodes to input into relational networks, creating new configurations of protagonists and story arcs that push us to (re)encounter images that saturate our everyday lives.”

Heavy Load (2022)Video game

The computer game was exhibited for the first time in the bunker of Regelbau 411 from March to May 2022.

Heavy Load presents a world centered around daily chores. In the game, the player gathers water from a lake and pour it into a tub on top of a hill. Based on the action of collecting water, the heroic tales typically forming the narratives in the gaming world are displaced.

The game is based on a quote from the short story “Nawa” by Kōbō Abe on which the video game director Hideo Kojima has based his game Death Stranding. The quote reads: “The “rope,” along with the “stick,” are two of mankind’s oldest tools. The stick to keep the bad away, the rope used to bring the good toward us. They were our first friends, of our own invention. Wherever there were people, there were the rope and the stick. (...) Unlike the stick, the rope had potential to tie things close to you together.”
The game draws on the idea of the rope as something you use to draw things to yourself. In the game you are a person who picks up water. You take the water from a lake and pour it into a tub on top of one of the hills that surround the lake.

The work is made in collaboration with Nina Møller (sound), Oscar Louw (programming), Bastian Leonhardt Strube (game design) and Mikkel Battefeld (game design).

A Piano is Too Heavy to Carry (2022)Video installation8 min

A Piano is Too Heavy to Carry intertwines narratives about human bodies, the bodies of instruments and nature in a speculative future scenario. It depicts a vision of a future hunter-gatherer society, where a mixture of prehistoric objects and post-apocalyptic speculations give shape to the black holes in history and nourish thoughts about an imaginary future.

The protagonist of the film is the gatherer. A cyborg-like hybrid of organism and machine, reality and fantasy, past and future. The gatherer does not feed on triumph or defeat, but on repetition, on the circular and the continuous activity of hauling as essential to life. As a counter-narrative to the hunter’s brave exploits, the gatherer represents the eternal hauling-home-of-stuff as part of our history, but also makes clear that the gathering of all the artefacts underpinning our worldview is both selective and subjective.

The film revolves around the writing of stories and of history, and how stories about the future are shaped by stories about the past, which are in turn influenced by our own time and space.

Gleaner (2022)SculpturePainted PETG plastic108x30x160 cm

A 3D-printed sculpture of the gatherer. The work title is related to the expression ‘to glean’ meaning to gather or collect something from the ground. It refers to the film The Gleaners & I by Agnes Varda and Ursula Le Guin's essay The carrier bag theory of fiction, both working with the gatherer as a figure.

Gleaner was made for the exhibition 'Haul' at Kunsthal Regelbau 411 in Thyholm, which took place in two bunkers from the Second World War. The contrast between figure and surroundings, the collector and the bunker, was a central part of the work, which drew parallels to possible new narratives in our conflict-ridden world.

As a counter-narrative to the hunter’s brave exploits, the gatherer represents the eternal hauling-home-of-stuff as part of our history, but also makes clear that the gathering of all the artifacts underpinning our worldview is both selective and subjective.
The human figure itself is an interpretation of

a type of sculpture that reconstructs prehistoric people from Neolithic times, that can be seen in cultural history museums around Europe, where the retelling of the character illuminates
the fictionality of how we reconstruct the past.
Made in collaboration with Nina Møller.

Asset. Everything used. All as it used to be. (2024)Video installation, 15 min, various dimensionsKunsthal Aarhus, Denmark, 2024

The video installation examines the diverse dimensions of collecting, exploring collections contained in private households and those in museums. In doing so, it highlights the intertwined relationship between people and things. In Asset. Everything used. All as it used to be., collections become more than passive objects. They acquire an agency and a monstrosity that extends beyond the things themselves, shaking dichotomies between the individual and the group, preservation and disappearance, the user and the used.

Asset. Everything used. All as it used to be. takes its departure in a personal story. One day in 2020, a woman in her 80s decides to clean 7 spoons which
were a gift given to her by her grandmother in the 1960s. She believes
they are silver but, when she dips the first spoon into a can of silver
polish, it vanishes. The woman is Hanne Ioannou, my grandmother.

What was considered a valuable object suddenly becomes something else. The spoon falls apart, but then restores itself. Through an animated
narrative it lives for a while among other things: a rotary dial phone,
spinach bouquets, a cloak, a hat, a pair of trousers, and shoes.

From this vantage point, the video installation considers different things that we consider to be heritage: from the spoon from my grandmother to the inherited knowledge about insects from an entomological collection at the University of Lund (where a large proportion of their specimens were donated by “amateur collectors”).
It then begins to explore how our relationship to objects and other beings are influenced by video games, and in particular how certain video games mirror the act of gathering or foraging, but to the extent to which it becomes hoarding.
A single detail becomes a hinge between scenarios. We shift from the collected specimen of the now-extinct butterfly Xerxes to hoarding of assets within the world of video games. A lone wolf talks about swarms and packs. Collections question what conservation means in an age of eco-crisis, the value of objects, and the idea of individualized heroism. Heritage becomes entangled with fantasy, the heroic with the domesticated, accumulation with loss. Through this, the film highlights how, in themselves, collections can dissolve its own categorization and act as storytelling devices in a world of disappearance and rupture.

Stay Up Here with You Forever (2020)Video loop
1:34 min.

The revolutionary bourgeoisie reflects upon freedom. They have been doing that for a long time. My friends do not feel free. They are yearning. Longing for freedom. None of my friends have the surplus to ponder what freedom they long for.

The oldest flutes were made of bones from animals. The first bone flute, that is, the one that can be dated furthest back in time, was built from the bone of a cave bear. Based on the archaeological find, it was not possible to determine what the bone flute had been used for. Maybe it was used to lure animals during a hunt. An instrument to mimic the sound of the birds.

A lyrebird pigeon was raised in captivity in a household where a young boy played the flute. The pigeon copied the flute player and learned two tunes and an ascending scale. When released back into the wild, the bird's flute-like songs spread throughout the local lyrebird population. In this way, human songs moved into the world of birds.
Back in the year 1972, Singapore Airlines started a new branding strategy where the airline's flight attendants were established as its icons. In a jingle from 1973 played in an airline commercial the same year, the singer sings the following words: “Singapore girl, you look so good I want to stay up here with you forever. You’re a great way to fly.” In the song, a character is established: Singapore Girl. A stewardess you meet in the air on one of the airline's routes. She is wearing a uniform developed by designer Pierre Balmain with inspiration from the traditional costume “Sarong Kebaya”, which is worn in Singapore and Malaysia, among other places.
In 1993, a wax figure of Lim Suet Kwee was made, which was exhibited at the Madame Tussauds Museum in London. In 2015, a wax figure was made of Nur Surya Binte Mohamed Ambiah. This was exhibited in Singapore - again at Madame Tussauds. Lim Suet Kwee and Nur Surya Binte Mohamed Ambiah are both employed as flight attendants by Singapore Airlines. The wax figures, however, primarily portray Singapore Girl, as both women are wearing their uniforms and stand in a “servile” pose, which stewardesses typically stand in when passengers are boarding the plane.
In one of Singapore's newspapers, The Straits Times, the phenomenon is described as follows: "To remove the Singapore Girl icon from Singapore Airlines is like removing Mickey Mouse from Disneyland.". But Singapore Girl is more than a cartoon character—she is the stewardess who works on the plane. In this way, the character has the function of turning the company's workers into fictional characters in a narrative that is to brand the company.
When the singer in the jingle mentioned above expresses a desire to be up in the sky with the stewardesses forever, he also expresses a desire that the flight attendants should always be at work.
The imaginary workers of the air are freer than those of the earth.

ALVA 3 (2021)Publication & music release

ALVA 3 is a book and a music release produced in collaboration with sound artist Xenia Lopez. The music consists of songs and vocal compositions accompanied by piano. 6 different voices guide the listener through fragmented narratives, which explore the paranormal as a place of kindness that one might devote oneself to, when there is no space given within the normal. The publication is based on musical compositions which were initially presented in the video installation ALVA II (2019) first exhibited at Kunsthal Aarhus and again during CLICK Festival and Video Art Festival Turku in Finland. The publication contains lyrics as well illustrations which were developed in continuation of the universe explored within the video work ALVA II.
ALVA is a continuous project. With emphasis on the voice understood as a prosthesis separated from the body, the ALVA project works with the paranormal, in addition to working with the idea of the voice as a ghost, and reproductions as phantoms. In ALVA, we follow Mlle: a voice that travels in a ghost box (a device for communication with other dimensions and a medium through which voices without bodies can speak). Mlle encounters a 4 headed hydra-monster playing the piano, a cabbage head, hydroponic eco-systems, water and vocal tracts.

    Homage to Airway (2019)Video installation
12 min.

The film examines agency as a concept in relation to various historical figures and non-playable characters from computer games. Through this, the work examines how the minor characters of history could be given renewed agency through a reassessment of the image regimes through which history is told.
About the work (written by Marianne Grymer Bargeman at ARoS Art Museum):

While ‘airway’ can be a reference to air travel and human respiration alike, in this context ‘Airway’ is the name of a dog. Homage to Airway takes its starting point in a 1920s photograph depicting the dog Airway, who was part pet, part lab animal to two anaesthesiologists. Their tests on Airway led to the development of a device which serves to open the patient’s airways. The invention became known as Guedel’s Airway, named after both the doctor and dog involved.

The work also takes its point of departure in a sculpture created by Friedrich Wilhelm Wolff in 1847: a satirical bronze sculpture depicting Germany’s first experiment with anaesthesia, conducted on an old, blind bear in the Berlin zoo. In the centre of the sculpture, we see the bear surrounded by various animals. Clad in human clothes, the animals have features pointing to the various doctors involved in the experiment.
These characters are posited within a tale that takes place in two worlds simultaneously: The Garden and The Plot. We witness two virtual scenarios with a tangled relationship to reality—and to each other. The unifying figure of the work is Broken Face, a hybrid between a sculpture and a petrified console game character: a so-called ‘non-playable character’.

Animals rarely carry world history on their shoulders, but this work brings some of the overlooked stories to the fore and posits historical material within a contemporary setting. Similarly, these stories have been turned into images that take on a distinctive autonomy. Two important aspects of the film concern the set-piece quality of its imagery and the focus on respiration and breathing evident in its soundtrack. Based on this starting point, Gjerding questions how we perceive the world through the images we produce and surround ourselves with. Homage to Airway is about the status of images and how we live with, and re-code, existing images.

    ALVA II (2019)Installation
(1-channel video,
4-channel sound)
12 min.

ALVA II is an audio and video installation, made by Sophia Ioannou Gjerding and Xenia Xamanek. ALVA II deals with the voice as a prosthetic element separated from the body.
In ALVA II we follow Mlle. Mlle is a voice that travels in a ghost box. A ghost box is a device for communication with other dimensions and a medium through which voices without bodies can speak. Mlle encounters hosts, shells, ghosts, vocal tracts, other objects and other voices. They sing, speak, hum and cry through ghost boxes. Throughout Mlle’s journey romances and sorrow exist in songs and voices.

The video installation consists of a one-channel video projection and a four-channel audio setup for the viewer to enter. Different voices travel between the speakers. They sing and speak a mixture of phrases, sounds and verses as a musical composition. The installation works as a bodily experience itself, with several shifts in direction of the voices, as if the viewer is standing in the middle of a choir or circle of ghosts.
